SUSFUTURE 2024 From Tradition to Future – A Journey of Sustainable Fashion
International Design Exhibition
New Zealand artists showcased their creativity in Taipei at the Susfuture 2024 Tradition to Future design exhibition. The exhibition aspired to present a diverse range of sustainable fashion and designs. The goal was to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of sustainability.
The exhibition was by invitation only and textiles artist and researcher Deb Donnelly, was approached to submit a collection of works from New Zealand. It was an honour to be asked by her to photograph the collection.
My first task was to think about a location. The obvious choice was Battle Hill Forest Park. It is a regional park near Paekākāriki, in the Wellington Region of New Zealand’s lower North Island. The reason? To emphasise the organic connection of a typical rural New Zealand environment and its relationship to sustainable fabrics and jewellery.
Deb project-managed the Aotearoa Susfuture Collective submission for the exhibition. The submission involved one design piece per artist. Each piece related to sustainability and encompassed clothing, accessories, textiles, or items related to the body.
The submission was accepted, and the work was exhibited in two locations in Taipei, Taiwan, and online at https://www.susfuture.org/2024-sus-invi-exh-en/susfuture2024.
The exhibition ultimately showcased design creativity. It displayed diverse styles of over 100 artists and designers. These creators came from nearly 30 countries and regions.

Owen Mapp – sculpture based – Professional bone carvery
Hanne Eriksen – professional jeweller
Kereama Taepa – creative contemporary Maori digital artist
Clare Smith – Artist, costumier and art tutor
Kohai Grace, Weaver and fibre artist
